Importance of Nutrition: 

Muscle wasting is an unfortunate effect of NMD (Neuro Muscular Diseases) including Muscular Dystrophy (MD). This leaves a person physically weak and deficient in vital energy. Often nutrition is not given enough importance when it comes to physical and mental health of people with NMD. However choosing what to eat can have a profound impact on the physical and mental wellbeing. Often wrong food choices play a role in causing many preventable ailments such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, blood pressure, inflammation, auto-immune and Gut related issues etc.

Based on my extensive research and personal experience, a daily healthy diet should include:

  • At least 6 - 8 servings ( 1 serving = 1/2 cup) of colorful fruits

  • At least 6-8 servings of colorful vegetables including plenty of leafy greens

  • 2 servings of whole grains like quinoa, millets,  steel cut oats, wild rice etc.

  • A good source of protein (Personally, I find plants based sources such as lentils/beans, tofu, nuts and seeds to suit me better)

Benefits:

These foods provide an abundance of macro nutrients (Carbohydrates, Fats and Proteins), key minerals, vitamins and antioxidants which helps build our immunity, protects us from other diseases and help the respiratory system (specially our lungs) be clear of mucus. In addition, the above mentioned foods are rich in fiber which feeds our good GUT bacteria. I wouldn't be surprised if one day (in not se distant future) we learn that there is a strong GUT microbiome connection with MD. I have found whole plant based foods to be anti-inflammatory, easier to digest and helpful in avoiding constipation symptoms. Foods like fresh fruits and vegetables energizes the body, avoid becoming over weight and keeps one active and feeling light.

Avoid:

For good health, its best to minimize foods that contain white flour, added oils, white sugar and red meat. These are all detrimental to our health. Also absolutely minimize processed foods, fast foods, store bought deserts, junk foods etc. These foods cause inflammation in the body and can potentially speed up the NMD symptoms.

I suggest checking in with a well-informed holistic health care provider about the best diet for your health condition but also do your own research as well.
